Tonight marks the 50th Annual Monument Lighting in Baltimore’s Mount Vernon neighborhood. Did you know the iconic holiday tradition began at the suggestion of none other than Mayor William Donald Schaefer? He became inspired after a trip to Indianapolis, where decorative holiday lights adorned the city’s monuments. Prior to the first lighting of the monument, Baltimore’s garden clubs would decorate Mount Vernon Square with greenery for the holiday season each year. If you are headed to the lighting tonight, come down to the city early and visit us, just two blocks from the event. The Museum is open FREE for First Thursday until 5 p.m. today. Please note our parking lot will be closed after 5 pm. Image: Washington Monument Christmas Card, pen and ink drawing by Betty Wells, 1973. Maryland Center for History and Culture, H.
