November is #NationalAviationHistoryMonth, so we are sharing some unique Maryland history. Our state was the first to manufacture flying boats as early as 1929 when Glenn L. Martin built a twin-engine monoplane for the Navy at his plant in Middle River. For about 40 years Maryland boasted four factories building airplanes that could land and take off on the water. Norman N. Rubin’s article, “From the Sea with Wings: Maryland and the Flying Boat” in this throwback issue of the “Maryland Historical Magazine” (vol. 72, no. 2, Summer 1997) is a richly illustrated source for those interested in this little-known aspect of aviation history. Read it by clicking on the "Maryland Historical Magazine Article" tab in our bio link. Image: Yankee Clipper at Harbor Field, photograph by Robert Kniesche, Baltimore, 1939.
