Did you know that before he served as Mayor of Baltimore from 1971 to 1987 and Governor of Maryland from 1987 to 1995, William Donald Schaefer served in the U.S. Army Hospital Corps? After Schaefer graduated with a law degree from the University of Baltimore, he enlisted as a private in the Hospital Corps on October 17, 1942. He served in supervisory positions in England and other military hospitals in Western Europe. Schaefer left active duty after World War II with the rank of major and remained in the U.S. Army Reserves until he retired in 1979 with the rank of colonel, indicated by the silver eagles pinned to the jacket of his uniform's shoulders.
