Recognize these dresses? The blue and gold striped dress from our Fashion Archives should be familiar to those who visited our "Spectrum of Fashion" exhibition earlier this year. The other is from the collection at the Fashion Archives and Museum of Shippensburg University.
Despite the different colorways, these two garments bear a striking resemblance due to the matching patterns of their wool challis fabrics. Made in the 1840s, these gowns represent the craze for the European paisley pattern that was inspired by the appearance of cashmere shawls from India in the 19th century.
We are excited to link these dresses together. It is a discovery that makes us wonder how many other matching garments may exist in other museum collections!
