This September, members of Maryland’s Jewish community are celebrating the High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We wish you all a happy High Holidays and happy Jewish New Year.
On September 13, 1814, as Jewish Baltimoreans were preparing for the High Holidays, their planning was interrupted by British naval vessels appearing on the horizon prepared to bombard Fort McHenry. Jewish Baltimoreans raced to join their militia regiments and to help defend the city. One of these men was Mendes Cohen, a defender at Fort McHenry. Twenty-five hours later on September 14, after the successful defense of the city, Jewish Baltimoreans gathered to celebrate Rosh Hashanah and celebrate the New Year.
