This wooden hurley was brought from Ireland to the United States in 1915 by Richard Francis Cashen and used for the country’s native Gaelic game of hurling. The object of the game was to use a hurley to hit a ball either over the opponent’s crossbar for one point or into the guarded net below the crossbar for three points. The tick marks in the handle are likely evidence of previous players keeping track of their score.
