Diaries often provide a private outlet for personal reflection on one's emotions, experiences, and relationships. In his diary, George M. Shriver (1868-1942) of Baltimore, Maryland wrote in detail about his love and adoration for his soon-to-be wife, Lizzie. In the summer and autumn of 1887, George wrote almost daily about the object of his affection and the things they did together, as well as his other friendships. You can read an excerpt from George's diary, along with several others, in the exhibition "Intimate Expressions: Personal Diaries of Maryland Life" and catch a glimpse of the world through the eyes of Marylanders from the 18th-20th centuries. The exhibition is now open through June 2022 in our niche gallery outside of the H. Furlong Baldwin Library. See it this Thursday, September 2, on Free First Thursday. Image: Diary, George M.
