You may recognize this eye-catching marquee on North Avenue, but you may not have known that it was originally established as the Centre radio-theater complex on the site of Colonial Motor Co.’s garage in 1939 by Morris Mechanic. Not only did it show second-runs of films initially screened in theaters downtown, but it also hosted a radio station, a bank, a store, and a parking garage. The theater was renamed Film Centre in 1954, but only survived for four more years. In 2015, Jubilee Baltimore revived the building and installed a replica marquee as the JHU-MICA Film Centre. You won’t find a bank or radio station, but the building now houses Impact Hub, Sparkypants, the Center for Neighborhoods, the Baltimore Jewelry Center, and the film departments for both MICA and JHU. Learn more about the history of moviegoing in Baltimore in the exhibition, “Flickering Treasures: Rediscovering Baltimore’s Forgotten Movie Theaters,” brought to you by PNCBank.
