We are pleased to announce the acquisition of a notable new portrait to the Museum collection—a portrait of Baltimore native and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Thurgood Marshall (1908-1993) by African American contemporary artist Nathaniel K. Gibbs (1948-2018). The large portrait was done the year of Marshall's death.
Nathaniel Gibbs was born and raised in Baltimore, attending Frederick Douglass High School, earning a BFA at Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA from American University. In addition to portraits, he is known for his depictions of everyday life, imagined historical scenes, and landscapes. Gibbs was commissioned to paint many prominent African American figures, including former Mayor Clarence “Du” Burns, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Cab Calloway, and Abel Wolman, in addition to painting Marshall.
