#DidYouKnow that the Maryland flag is comprised of the paternal and maternal family colors of George Calvert, the founder of the Province of Maryland and 1st Lord Baltimore? The black-and-yellow portion comes from the Calvert Family Coat of Arms’ shield and the red-and-white cross comes from the Crossland Family Coat of Arms on Calvert’s mother’s side. The most common Maryland flag by the time of the Civil War was dark blue and featured the Great Seal of Maryland in the center, but it was not until 1904 that the General Assembly adopted the current design as the official state flag. It combined the Calvert colors, which were frequently flown by Union Army during the Civil War, and the Crossland Arms, which were considered the secession colors.
