#OnThisDay in 1921, the all-Black Greenwood section of Tulsa, Oklahoma was viciously attacked by white residents. The prosperous community was targeted after an alleged assault was reported, and a Black teenager was arrested. May 31 marked the beginning of widespread violence and destruction of the Greenwood community. By the end hundreds were dead, numerous Black-owned businesses were destroyed, and much of the Black population fled Tulsa. While Maryland did not experience anything on the scale of the Tulsa Race Riot, race-based terror and vigilante violence has marred the state’s history. The Maryland Center for History and Culture is proud to be a designated member of the Maryland Lynching Truth and Reconciliation Commission (MLTRC). This organization’s task is to document, share and promote community healing around the trauma of racial terror lynchings, at least 40 of which took place in our state.
