#OnThisDay in 1844, American inventor Samuel Morse sent the first long-distance telegraphic message between Washington D.C., and Baltimore. Taken from the Bible, Numbers 23:23, the rather ominous message, “What hath God wrought?” was transmitted using a system of dots and dashes that became known as Morse Code. The telegram was sent over a distance of 44 miles from the Capitol in Washington to the B&O Mount Clare depot in Baltimore using an experimental telegraph line that had been built with the aid of Congress.
