Born in the city of Baltimore, Maryland, in the year 1887 to formerly enslaved parents, James Herbert “Eubie” Blake was destined for greatness. At a young age, Blake learned to play the piano, and by the age of 16 he had begun playing professionally. He is now regarded throughout the country as one of the most influential ragtime and jazz music composers and performers of the 20th century. Today, Blake is remembered for his numerous original ragtime tunes, many of which originated in the form of a 1921 musical titled "Shuffle Along." On the centennial of the musical’s debut, we are honoring the musician by taking a closer look at some of Eubie Blake’s personal effects. This reed organ can be folded into a small carrying case for easy transportation. Signs of wear and tear demonstrate that it served Blake well as he used it to practice for performances in hotel rooms while he was touring the country.
