Happy birthday Johnny Unitas! The legendary quarterback was born #OTD, May 7, 1933, to parents of Lithuanian heritage. He attended the University of Louisville before joining the Baltimore Colts in 1956. The following year the Newspaper Enterprise Association recognized him as the NFL’s MVP and awarded him the prestigious Jim Thorpe Trophy. In 1958 Unitas led the Colts to an NFL Championship victory over the New York Giants in the first overtime game in NFL history. Unitas secured two more NFL Championships in 1959 and 1968 respectively, before leading the Colts to a 16—13 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl V. Unitas retired in 1974 and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979. He died on September 11, 2002, aged 69. Image: Johnny Unitas, unknown photographer, undated.
