#DidYouKnow there is a Maryland County, Liberia? The Maryland Colonization Society established the West African community in 1834. The Maryland Colonization Society was opposed to slavery’s continuation in the state, but also against Black men and women living freely with the same rights as white citizens. They hoped to send freed Black residents to the Maryland Colony in Liberia. The Republic of Maryland would declare independence from the Colonization Society in 1853, and was ultimately annexed by the country of Liberia in 1857. Teachers can learn more at the Summer Teacher Institute where Professor Christopher Bonner, an expert on the colonization movement, from the University of Maryland will be one of our featured speakers. The institute will be live and synchronous throughout the week, with most activities taking place in-person. Register by May 31. Click on the "Summer Teacher Institute Application" tab in our bio link to apply today. Image: View of Cape Palmas, Maryland in ...
