Today is the 124th Maryland Hunt Cup. The Timber race is a longstanding state tradition in Worthington Valley, MD, though spectators are limited this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This trophy cup in the shape of a lidded flagon was awarded to the winner of the Twentieth Annual Maryland Hunt Cup Steeplechase, established in the year 1894. The lid is embellished with a cast version of the Maryland State Seal on the thumb grip. This particular trophy was won by the horse Zarda, who was owned by George Willing Jr. and ridden by amateur jockey G. Allen Lee in 1913. You can see this Hunt Cup in person and learn more about our state’s history since its founding in 1634 in our new exhibition, “Discover Maryland.”
