We have the answer to our March 22 Flag Trivia question about why it is important to freeze a flag during the conservation process – because It kills bugs! Freezing textiles, such as flags and banners, kills any tiny fabric-eating bugs, specifically varied carpet beetle larvae, that might be hiding in the material. During this process, textiles are frozen and remain frozen for 24-hours before thawing completely. This process is repeated again to kill any bugs that might go into hibernation during the first freezing process. Otherwise, a hibernating insect could wake up in the rehoused storage space - an all you can eat buffet full of other stored textiles!
