Having put on my own meet a few times, I’ve developed a certain appreciation for well-run races. In 2017 I competed at the #LibertyMile in Pittsburgh and walked away from that experience beyond impressed by how organized, welcoming and professional the event was from start-to-finish. It was a tight race and I placed 2nd after making the executive decision to allow benfblankenship the victory. He asked me before the race if I’d please let him win. (This sorta thing happens in professional running all the time, it’s like wrestling or baseball in 1919.) Once I saw the tears in his eyes as he begged me I decided it was a worthy sacrifice just to cheer him up and see that beautiful smile shine.
