In this video I am using a safarilandgroup holster with an ALS/SLS security mechanism, as us cops call it “the hood”.
Many times, I saw officers, including myself when I was a rookie, have the SLS “the hood” disengaged. The thought process was that I would be “faster”. What I didn’t know at the time was that it wasn’t necessarily true. It was just my lack of ability to get it out of the holster due to my lack of training.
While training for ERT (S.W.A.T) tryouts, I practiced at home, on the range, or even between calls, constantly working on the SLS until I became proficient at it.
In 2016, I found myself trying to apprehend a suspect, but I didn’t have the upper hand. I was losing the battle due to his massive size because he had his hand on my weapon attempting to pull it out. What saved me was the “hood” SLS security mechanism.
The moral of the story is to stop being lazy, train with your equipment, and stop making ridiculous excuses for wearing it disengaged.
