January 1st marks a special day for Wildcat football for three main reasons. The first reason is it was the date of their only Rose Bowl victory back in 1949, when we defeated the California Golden Bears 20-14. The second reason is in 1995, led by running back Darnell Autry and linebacker Pat Fitzgerald, Northwestern had a record of 10-2 and went 8-0 in the Big Ten. They ended up winning the Big Ten championship and this earned them a spot in the Rose Bowl against USC on January 1st, 1996. Unfortunately they lost the game, however that season will go down as arguably Northwestern football’s best and most memorable season of all-time.
