When figuring out what drills to use for athletes, you want to know a few things:
•individual (or group) athlete needs
•demands/theme of the session
•when in the session drills will be done
Today’s session was acceleration focused, so coaching emphasis was placed on projection with every step and retraction of the foot back under the hip. While these 2 concepts are very simple, athletes may struggle with them for various reasons.
In this case, the athlete had trouble with the retraction aspect of the sprint. In her case, she spent too long on the ground pulling and then pushing herself away so that she didn’t have time or space for her swing leg to do what it needed to (flex from the hip then attack under her hip).
In order to keep her drills low intensity and apply them between reps, wall lean switches were prescribed so she could feel what her legs should be doing in a controlled manner.
