Back story, my mom immigrated to the US in the 60s. During the 60s and 70s my mom lived in Virginia, Tennessee, and Atlanta. She never talks about this time, but my assumption is she witnessed some difficult things during civil rights in the south and herself experienced profound racism. Like many Asians, her tactic was to not rock the boat, work hard and obey the “man.” There was safety in ducking her head so she herself wouldn’t be a target. She worked very hard to achieve a level of success as a small business owner. However, this is a key example of the “model minority” myth that created a riff between Blacks and Asians. The perception of universal success among Asian-Americans is wielded to downplay racism's role in the persistent struggles of other minority groups, especially black Americans.
