Almalyn Akmad serves as a community volunteer in the Philippines.
The young mother belongs to the nomadic Sama Bajau people who frequently roam between the
#Philippines,
#Malaysia, and
#Indonesia by sea. Their itinerant culture has left many without proper identification documents which creates obstacles in accessing basic rights like education or healthcare.
Almalyn has already gone through the challenging process of obtaining a birth certificate and can now help other members of her community who are often illiterate.
Thanks to the support from the
#UnitedNations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), she and other community volunteers have helped register more than 600 Sama Bajau people, giving them access to essential health services,
#COVID19 assistance and vaccination programmes. “Being able to help is a great feeling, especially now that it’s really necessary for people to have a birth certificate,” said Almalyn.
