Snow decorates the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, in
#Tanzania. The impressive snow cap might be gone by 2030 as a result of the climate crisis.
Mountains cover more than 25% of the earth's land surface and are home to nearly one billion people. They also provide key food crops and most of the world's freshwater.
Unfortunately, mountains are under threat from the climate emergency and overexploitation. As the global climate continues to warm, mountain people — some of the world’s poorest — face even greater struggles to survive. The rising temperatures also mean that mountain glaciers are melting at unprecedented rates, affecting freshwater supplies downstream for millions of people.
Saturday's World Mountain Day is an opportunity to highlight that
#MountainsMatter and that we need to protect mountain ecosystems and species.
