✡️ Chinese Jews read the Torah, circa 1910.
An online exhibit from uofwalibraries’ Tateuchi East Asia Library traces the history of China’s Jewish Kaifeng community through documents, illustrations and photos from roughly 690 CE to the early 20th century.
The Chinese Jewish community in Kaifeng, China, existed for more than a thousand years, after Jews from nearby regions, likely Persia, settled in China during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE).
In the image, two Kaifeng Jews read the Torah in traditional garb. From the exhibit: “The reader stands in front, facing the West, and his hands hang down in the attitude of respect. His assistant unrolls the Scriptures as required and by the side stands a third person with one of the ‘Square Scriptures’ in his hands, which he follows in order to prompt the reader if such should be necessary.”
