When you’re eying a return to the Olympics after leaving your first one with a gold and a silver medal, you can set the bar high. That’s what Rai Benjamin (kingben), the former Mount Vernon High School, UCLA and USC standout, did Sunday. Competing in the final of the men’s 400-meter hurdles during the U.S. Olympic Trials’ closing night, the 26-year-old ran away from the rest of the field and into the record book. Benjamin’s 46.46 time was not only the fastest run in the world this year but also an U.S. Olympic Trials meet record — besting his own previous mark. “It means a lot,” Benjamin said of making his second American Olympic team, no easy task, since, unlike many countries that have “discretionary picks,” the U.S. system makes the Trials all or nothing.
