The 22-person crew of the Mark W. Barker lives on board while working, for weeks at a time. Each day at meal times, sailors dine in the galley of the ship.
There, chief steward Julie Kowalski and second cook Cristonna Lisby prepare a variety of dishes every day.
The menu is surprisingly robust; one day, it features gyros, hamburgers, loaded baked potatoes, Buffalo chicken wraps, Coney dogs, sandwiches, soups and salads — plus, a freezer filled to the brim with ice cream, and an Oreo cheesecake dessert special.
“Nobody goes hungry here,” Kowalski says.
