Benjamin Bloom—eponymous creator of the famous taxonomy of learning objectives—was born in Lansford, Pennsylvania, on February 21, 1913. The Taxonomy of Educational Objectives, which Bloom wrote with a team of experts over several years, was an attempt to describe and categorize desired student learning outcomes and to help educators accurately assess what students were learning. A voracious reader from childhood on, Bloom was an educational psychologist and a proponent of mastery learning—the idea that a student must achieve a certain level of mastery of required knowledge before being allowed to move on. Bloom believed that focusing on mastery would help teachers provide higher quality instruction. Bloom died in 1999, but his ideas are still shaping how we think about education.
