Today, Wednesday, April 27, people from across the world wear denim for the purpose of supporting sexual assault survivors , putting an end to victim blaming, and coming together to put an end to sexual violence. History of Denim Day: In 1999, the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the victim was wearing tight jeans at the time of the assault. In a statement by the Chief Judge, he argued, “because the victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them, and by removing the jeans it was no longer rape but consensual sex.” Enraged by the verdict, within a matter of hours the woman in the Italian Parliament launched into immediate action and protested by wearing jeans to work.
