#SlugStories Commencement 2019 Special Feature "Without a doubt the coolest thing I have worked on at UC Santa Cruz was the SlugSat project. For the last nine months I have been part of the effort to design, build, and test a working satellite that will someday be sent into orbit to facilitate ham radio communication and conduct research for the Santa Cruz Particle Physics Institute. SlugSat has given me the opportunity to develop my skills not just in engineering but also in team management and technical communication. Building a satellite on a budget is not an easy task, and much of my work has been to develop solutions that require minimal money, space, and power. Much of my work has been on low-power, error-tolerant memory for use with the satellite’s high-energy particle physics experiment. This project, once launched, will provide the Santa Cruz Institute of Particle Physics with insight into lower energies of terrestrial gamma-ray flashes then have ever previously been observed....
