Western Branch recently ended the 18 year death grip the Oscar Frommel Smith Tigers had on the Region Finals, when they defeated them at home in the Class 6 Region A region semi-finals, 28-14. In an earlier regular season matchup, the Bruins lost to the Tigers, 2-0, in a closely contested matchup. The Bruins were led by UNC commit, Paul Billups II, who while playing rb and qb, scored two touchdowns and intercepted a pass on defense at a crucial point near the end of the game. The Bruins had not defeated the Tigers period since 2003. Oscar Smith was vying for a chance at a third Class 6 Championship in a row, winning the previous two and playing in every region final since 2004.
