Recent photos of the Phelps Park basketball court in Minneapolis, Minnesota by 📷 oldmanhoopin … Created with artist 🎨 jendayiberryart in 2022 with support from 5starbasketball and elevatefndn … This court renovation was led by a group of local community members in response to George Floyd’s death - murdered by a police officer one block away from the park on May 25, 2020 - in order to create a safe and inviting public space for community to gather and play. Public basketball courts are a breeding ground for citizenship. The stakes may be low - i.e. how does our team get to 11 before the other team? - but it is a place to learn how to problem solve with others and an opportunity to practice what kind of person you will be in the world. Citizenship should not stop at the public park, however, and we should all make an effort to shape the world we want to live in for others.
