The light meter... This small tool is essential for learning photography! There are physical units available on the market that meter exposure for you. But, every camera has a built in version of this small tool. Think of the seperate unit as the full version of a program. It has many more features, and is much more helpful in field. Whereas the built in version is just a little help in the field, rather than the guide. With that being said, don't underestimate it! For beginners, the light meter is a great way to learn how to transition from Auto to Manual. Rather than changing your settings, taking a photo, and adjusting based on what you see, you can change your settings to what you think they should be, and check the light meter. It'll give you a rough idea for exposure, and if you're under exposing or over exposing.
