In 1964 Brown’s women’s ice hockey became the country’s first intercollegiate program. Pembroke College freshman Nancy Schieffelin ‘67 was invited to practice with the men’s team disguised in a Brown uniform. The experience inspired her to organize an ice hockey team, which became the first women’s collegiate program in the country. Seventeen women would practice late on Monday nights under the supervision of Sarah Phillips, a Pembroke physical education instructor. In order to purchase equipment, the team sold hockey rule sheets at the Brown men’s games. The team was named Pembroke Pandas. Thank you for leading the way and inspiring us even today!
