Happy Black History Month! Among many other things, this month serves as an important reminder to reflect on the immense contributions and creations produced by Black artists in the United States and around the world. As a genre-defying artist, Carrie Mae Weems has made a name for herself by appropriating visual stereotypes to emphasize their problematic and violent nature while reclaiming them in defiance. These works include photographs with text overlaid onto historic images to question their authority, as well complex installations consisting of fabric, audio, digital images, and video that shine a light on critical issues impacting the Black community within the United States.
