Today we celebrate the birthday of Huguette Caland (Beirut, Lebanon, 1931–2019), whose works are featured in themcmullen's upcoming "Taking Shape: Abstraction from the Arab World, 1950s–1980s."⠀
⠀
In "Bribes de corps (Body Parts)" Caland covers the canvas with a curved, voluminous shape in pulsing orange red. Caland’s exploration of sensuality and eroticism pushed the limits of abstraction and legibility of bodily forms, in order for her to, in her words, “find another type of seduction, out of the ordinary.”⠀
⠀
"Bribes de corps (Body Parts)," 1971, oil on canvas, 37¾ × 37¾ in. Collection of barjeelart⠀
