At Equipped Worlds this week, the middle session of Day 2 was given over to the 57kg women.
Italy’s Alessandra Cernigliaro looked comfortable with her 195kg opener which netted her the bronze medal even though she didn’t manage to get another squat on the board. Hot favourite Kimberly Johnson of USVI opened with the same weight but went on to squat an easy looking 207.5kg on her third for the silver medal. Junior world champion, Emily Finnern of Germany, impressed from the start, opening with a massive 205kg squat and pushing up to 212.5kg on her second.
Last year’s silver medalist, Yen-Tzu Huang of Chinese Taipei, went toe to toe with Finnern on bench, both going three for three and ending up with 152.5kg. Huang took the bench gold, being nearly a kilo lighter on bodyweight. Johnson took bronze with 142.5kg.
At sub-total, Finnern led Johnson by 15kg with Huang 5kg further back. However, Huang’s campaign hit a speed bump when she anticipated the down command on her opening deadlift...
