This has been a trying week for Houstonians. Hurricane Beryl made landfall on Monday morning. We were among the 2.8 million people without power immediately following the storm. All in all, we were lucky and only suffered minor damage (a gutter and awning were ripped off of our home and the awning and fascia of our building at the store were ripped off. We also had a couple of leaks, but all repairable). We finally had our power restored at home yesterday afternoon after nearly five days though it remains out at my office.
In the end, I’ve realized that these experiences and inconveniences serve to deepen the meaning of home. Aside from the creature comforts that make home the best place on earth, there is something intangible and special about being together as a family in your own home. I’ve also realized the importance of community. Our friends, family, and neighbors have been amazing throughout this ordeal, taking us in and giving us shelter so we didn’t have to sleep in the swel...
