#WooWho: “Growing up in #Hawaii, security and militarization issues permeated my awareness from an early age. It’s certainly paradise on one level, but on another, it’s the state with the highest share of land occupied by U.S. military bases. Attending a native Hawaiian school, I witnessed years of ongoing tensions between the federal government and native Hawaiian communities that continue to object to the impact #military activities have on Hawaii’s lands and people. I was drawn to take undergrad courses at uofwa that spoke to the complexities of security issues, and I ultimately came to specialize in arms control, disarmament, and nonproliferation. I then worked in NGOs dedicated to these areas, ranging in my #research from landmines to #nuclear weapons. My hope is that we work toward security solutions not based on weapons and persistent arms races, but rather in international institutions that leverage technologies to support and verify disarmament treaties.
