The McKinney Building, a former vibrant Black-owned dance hall, has housed over 14 businesses since 1917. Musician legends like Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Count Basie, and Dizzy Gillespie played in the hall.
Nestled on a street corner one block south of the historic
@theshopsatsharpend, J.W. Blind Boone Home, and Second Baptist Church, the area is integral to Columbia’s Black history.
This year, the McKinney Task Force was formed to decide what to do with this historic gem. “Find a use for it," Sheals says. That’s how you save a historic building—put it to work," Architectural historian Deb Sheals says. City leaders have suggested the establishment of an African American museum, a downtown welcome center, and a jazz performance venue.
