This hornworm has been parasitized and the protrusions are actually cocoons of a beneficial insect that helps control garden pests, likely a small wasp in this case. The larvae feed on the inside of the worm, killing it - and saving your tomato plants from total destruction! If you see a parasitized hornworm in your garden, leave it where it is to allow the tiny adult wasps to emerge and go about their business dining on garden pests.
