October, 2017.⁠ •⁠ One of my first editors first told me that when you’re on assignment and find you’re overwhelmed, pick a direction (up, down, left or right) and find three details to photograph or report. You’ll find hooks to focus on and a path to follow. Look left: find the color of clothing, how a group sounds in motion and see how the kids are sitting on their parents’ shoulders. Look right: find the texture of the ancient church, how a bell sounds when it echoes and notice how colors are more vibrant in a rainstorm. Look down: why does the grass feel so cool, see how your friend is bottling up the river water and note how refreshing the river water feels on your feet. Look up: see the intricate stone mosaic depict the Holy Spirit at the same river where John baptized Jesus, notice how the Holy Spirit has subtly guided your path the whole way and real...
