Lift Me Up, O Jesus. •
They had fashioned a massive bronze crown of thorns surrounding a mass of rocks at the Garden of Gethsemane. You can reach through the thorns and touch the smooth rock. This morning, holding onto the thorns, I moved forward and leaned into the rocks. Had Christ himself done this? My mind began to spin and my heart had never beat so hard and so loudly before in my life. I moved my hand from the rock to my chest and took the deepest breath I think I’d ever taken in my life. I heard a shuffle of feet behind me and knew it was time to move but my hand wouldn’t let go of the thorns. I felt someone’s bump my back, and I finally let go. Moving to a nearby bench, I looked around me and saw a Polish nun kneeling close to where I was. Then she started singing.
