The California State Legislature is withholding $25 million in state funding from the UC until the UC Office of the President develops a “systemwide framework” for the uniform enforcement of rules around free speech across all campuses, according to the latest state budget. This new requirement by state lawmakers comes soon after the varied responses by UC campus administration to pro-Palestinian protests and encampments across all 10 UC campuses. Some encampments were shut down by UC campus administration with police intervention, while others such as UC Berkeley were dismantled by students after reaching agreements with campus leaders.
