“Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.”
With the computer raising multiple alarms during descent and just seconds of fuel left, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed the Apollo 11 lunar module “Eagle” on the Moon 55 years ago today. At that moment, they became the first humans to reach the surface of another world.
This is likely the first photo Armstrong captured from inside the Lunar Module after the Apollo 11 landing. Aldrin perfectly described the scene as “magnificent desolation.”
Image description: Neil Armstrong’s probable first photo after the Apollo 11 landing, taken from the Lunar Module window. In the foreground is one of the lunar module’s thrusters. The untouched lunar surface is pockmarked with shallow craters, dust and pebbles. Above the horizon, the lunar sky is black.
