Under northern Norway’s dim winter sky, pods of orcas feast on the massive schools of herring that flood the inlets and fjords. The hunting technique this particular population of orcas use looks more like an underwater ballet as the pod closes in on its prey, condensing the school into tight “bait balls” before striking. Some orcas will even use their tails to swat the bait balls and then gulp down the stunned fish. While this is an undeniably clever and unique tactic, it’s far from the only hunting method orcas utilize worldwide. In fact, different populations of orcas, from the shores of Argentina to Mexico’s pacific waters, each have their own hunting culture.
