#OnThisDay in 1969 police raided the Stonewall Inn, a New York City bar that was frequented by members of the gay community. Violence followed and the ensuing riot turned into a two-night uprising. The #StonewallRiots are remembered today as a symbol of gay empowerment and as one of the events that sparked the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement.
