In honor of #HospitalWeek, we’re sharing historical photography from around the UPMC system. July 1886: A horse-drawn ambulance service begins in Altoona to transport patients to the newly opened 28-bed Altoona Hospital (pictured in background), built on land donated by what was then the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. The ambulance driver sounded the gong (directly below and in front of him) to alert pedestrians and other obstacles on the roads that the ambulance was coming. The low stone wall visible behind the ambulance still remains on the UPMC Altoona campus today. In the first year of operation, Altoona Hospital treated 113 patients.
