"Women in the medical profession bring a unique perspective to their clinical, educational, and administrative roles that is frequently missing in our traditionally male-dominated field. We also are often asked to assume many roles and wear many hats — including those outside of work. Being a doctor and a mother simply adds another layer of complexity to those challenges!
I wish I could say that microaggressions in medicine are a thing of the past but, unfortunately, women doctors continue to face them. Those who must also deal with additional biases such as race and class have an even harder path. I am optimistic, though. When I was in my residency, I did not meet a full-time female faculty member until my third year. However, today our training environment is very different and much more diverse.
