Today marks the 54th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, the catalyst of the LGBTQIA+ movement.
The Stonewall Inn was a private bar that became a local hot spot for queer individuals at a time when they were wholly unwelcomed and socially discriminated against society. On June 28, 1969, police officers raided the club, arresting and harassing civilians. Tired of this unfair treatment, the situation transformed into a riot that led to protests throughout the next week, changing the course of LGBQIA+ history forever.
A year later, the very first Pride marches were held in NYC, LA and Chicago to commemorate the momentous day. Without the brave individuals who fought and protested decades ago, we wouldn’t be able to attend all the Pride parades and celebrations this month.
Here’s a collection of photos from none other than the Rowdy staff who has recently attended various Pride parades and events throughout the country to celebrate self-expression, love and LGBTQIA+ culture 🌈💖✨
